Crypto 101: What You Actually Need to Know Before You Buy

Crypto 101

Before you buy any cryptocurrency, you should understand three things: what it is, what drives its price, and how much volatility you can actually stomach.

What crypto actually is

Bitcoin and most cryptocurrencies are digital assets secured by cryptography on a decentralized network. Unlike a stock (which represents ownership in a company) or a bond (which is a loan to a government or company), most cryptocurrencies have no underlying cash flow. Their value is driven by supply, demand, and belief in their future utility or scarcity.

This makes them genuinely different from other asset classes: not better or worse, just different.

Bitcoin vs. Ethereum vs. everything else

Bitcoin is the original and largest. It has a hard supply cap of 21 million coins, which underpins its "digital gold" narrative.

Ethereum is a programmable blockchain. Most of the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem and NFT infrastructure runs on top of it. It's more complex, with more moving parts.

Everything else ranges from genuinely innovative projects to outright scams. If you're new to crypto, stick to the two major assets until you understand what you're looking at.

The volatility is real

Bitcoin has dropped 80% from its peak, more than once. If you invest $1,000 and it becomes $200, can you hold without panicking? That's not a hypothetical. It's happened repeatedly.

This is why most financial planners suggest limiting crypto to a small percentage of a diversified portfolio: enough to participate in the upside without being wiped out by the downside.
